The history of percentages

The history of percentages is a long and complicated one, full of twists and turns. For many centuries, the concept of percentage was unknown.

However, that all changed in the year 1202, when an Italian mathematician named Leonardo Fibonacci published his groundbreaking book Liber Abaci.

In it, Fibonacci introduced the Hindu-Arabic numeral system to the Western world, and with it, the concept of percentage. It wasn’t long before percentage became an essential tool in mathematical calculations.

Today, we use percentages in all sorts of applications, from determining grades in school to calculating interest on loans. And it all started with Fibonacci’s Liber Abaci.
